Septs

Direct MacLaren are people wich bear the name MacLaren or MacLauren or a related spelling or are related to these.

There are a number of historical lineages from LABHRUINN. Possibly translated as MacLAURIN.

Also the spellings "Mc" or "M' " are possible:

Laren, Lauren, Laurin, Laran, Leran, Claren, Cleran, Clarin, Lare, Laurie, etc.

There are also families that are considered part of the clan. These are called "Septs". 
e.g. derivations from the historical PATRICK (also belonging to the Lamont clan, but differing in knowledge of the historical background and descent of the families) like Paterson, Patterson, Peter, MacPatrick, MacPhate, MacPhater, MacFater, MacFeat, etc. or derivations from the Clan RUARI (also belonging to the Ranald clan, but can be distinguished by knowledge of the historical background and descent of the families, like
MacRory, MacRuari, MacGrory, etc.
